Why the Way Jewelry Feels Matters

We often think about jewelry in terms of how it looks: the color of gold, the brilliance of a stone, the shape of a ring or the movement of an earring. But the way jewelry feels matters too. We feel its weight, its surface, the way it sits on the hand or moves around the wrist. All of this is part of the pleasure of wearing a beautiful jewel.

The Pleasure of Solid Gold

There is something special about the feeling of solid gold. Gold is naturally dense. Pick up a solid 18K gold ring and you feel its substance. The same happens with a bracelet as it falls around the wrist or a pendant resting against the body. For me, this is part of the luxury of fine jewelry. The gold is not there simply to give the piece its color. You actually feel the precious material you are wearing. This doesn’t mean that jewelry should be heavy. A beautiful piece needs balance. A substantial ring can be extremely comfortable when it is well proportioned, while a much lighter one can be annoying if it turns on the finger or doesn’t sit properly.

A good goldsmith understand this. How a jewel feels on the body matters just as much as how it looks. Fine jewelry doesn’t always need to be so light that you forget you are wearing it. Sometimes feeling the jewel is part of the pleasure.

Gold, Surface and Touch

The surface of gold changes the experience too. Gold can be polished until it is completely smooth, or hammered, engraved, satin finished or sculpted, and each surface feels different. We touch our jewelry all the time, often without thinking about it. There is something pleasant about the warmth of gold.

The Value of Substance

Solid 18K gold is 75 percent pure gold. That matters. The value of a beautiful jewel is obviously not calculated by its weight alone. There is the design, the work of the goldsmith, the stones, the finishing and everything that goes into making it. And not every piece should be substantial. Some designs are beautiful precisely because they are delicate and light. But when a design calls for substance, there is luxury in using the precious material generously rather than simply creating the appearance of it.

With solid gold, part of what you are feeling is the material itself. It gives the jewel its color and beauty, but also its substance and intrinsic value. Over time, that feeling becomes familiar. You know the weight of a ring you wear often or the way a bracelet moves on your wrist. You reach for a piece without thinking about it, and sometimes you notice immediately when you are not wearing it. We may choose a jewel first because we love the way it looks. But as we live with it, the way it feels becomes part of why we love wearing it.

A beautiful jewel should be beautiful to see, beautiful to feel and a pleasure to wear.
